The new South Jersey high school sports season will get underway next week while college athletes with local ties have been playing spring sports for several weeks. This includes George Washington University graduate student Steve DiTomaso (Haddonfield Memorial) who is hitting .330 for the baseball team. He is the current team leader in hits (35) and runs (22).
The Phillies had been eliminated in the 2023 National League Championship Series by the Arizona Diamondbacks, and Steve DiPatri, like many fans, was down.
Yet, on the day after the Phillies season ended, DiPatri received a welcome pickme- up. There in the mail, he was informed that he would be a member of the 32nd annual Collingswood Athletic Hall of Fame class.
Hidalgo Adds More National Honors to Trophy Case
Righthander Dane Samartino will never forget his first win as a collegiate pitcher, and neither will his family. A 2023 Haddonfield graduate, Samartino is a freshman pitcher for Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a Division II school that competes in the highly competitive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
Here’s a closer look at the latest news regarding college athletes from The Retrospect coverage area: Freshman swimmer Henry McFadden (Haddonfield Memorial) is one of 12 Stanford University swimmers to qualify for this year’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. McFadden will race in the 200 free, an event in which he ranks No. 2 in Stanford history.
Six athletes, one coach and a team will be the newest inductees to the Haddon Township Athletic Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony is at 2 p.m. on Sunday March 24 at Auletto’s in Almonesson. Hidalgo and Fighting Irish Go Dancing
Spring sports are underway at college campuses across the country, and several athletes from The Retrospect coverage area are making an impact.
During his three varsity seasons on Collingswood’s basketball team, 6-foot-3 senior Tomas Money Jr. showed a steady progression each year. As a sophomore, Money averaged 9.6 points per game. That increased to 12.5 points per game as a junior. And then this season he took it to another level, averaging 18.6 points and setting the Collingswood single-game scoring record, not once but twice.
Hannah Hidalgo might only be a freshman on the women’s college basketball scene, but the Paul VI High School grad clearly knows how to finish the regular season on a high note. On Tuesday, the starting point guard for the Notre Dame women’s basketball team was named both the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie and ACC Defensive Player of the Year.
